A manuscript can contain the same words in print and as an ebook while needing different production decisions. The printed page has a fixed size. A reflowable ebook can change as readers adjust text size and use different devices.

Prepare a clean working document

Use consistent paragraph and heading styles rather than arranging the page with repeated spaces, tabs, or blank lines. Mark chapter breaks deliberately. Keep a record of image sources and permissions, and retain a clean master before producing format-specific versions.

Avoid designing the ebook by imitating a screenshot of the paperback. A page number or carefully positioned line may not behave the same way when the text reflows.

Check print as a physical object

For the print edition, review the chosen trim size, margins, chapter openings, page numbering, and how images reproduce. Follow the current specifications of the printer or publishing platform. Do not copy measurements from another book without considering your own format and page count.

Print proof questions: Is text comfortably away from the binding? Are chapter starts consistent? Are any pages unexpectedly blank? Are images and small captions readable at their actual printed size?
Ebook preview questions: Does the navigation work? Do headings stay meaningful when text size changes? Are image captions connected to their images? Are links descriptive and usable?

Give the ebook its own inspection

Amazon's ebook formatting guide covers chapter styles, navigation, images, links, and previewing. It also notes that a paperback manuscript may need reformatting for ebook use. Use the platform's current guide and preview tools rather than assuming a successful upload means the file reads well.

Fixed-layout books have different considerations; if your book depends on a highly designed page, investigate the supported format before committing to an approach.

Keep versions understandable

Label the editable master, print export, and ebook export so you can identify which file a correction belongs in. When a factual correction is made, update both editions deliberately and check their outputs again.

Formatting help is most effective when the text and intended formats are clearly defined. If you contact Annette about a project, include the manuscript length, whether it contains images or tables, the formats you need, and any platform requirements you already know.
