Progress tracks checked items, not the quality or readiness of a manuscript.
Revision becomes more manageable when each pass has a purpose. A chapter can have elegant sentences and still arrive in the wrong place. Work from larger questions toward smaller details so you do not repeatedly polish material that needs to move.
Begin with the book's promise
Write a sentence describing what the reader expects from this book. In fiction, that might involve a central tension or emotional journey. In nonfiction, it might be a question answered or a task made possible. Compare the draft with that promise before correcting individual commas.
The checklist groups work into structure, development, continuity, clarity, presentation, and final checks. Mark an item after you have reviewed it, not simply because you hope it is finished. The percentage shows checklist completion only; it is not a quality score or a guarantee of publication readiness.
Use one pass to collect patterns
Pass: Continuity Observation: A character's surname changes in chapters four and seven. Pattern: Names were revised in some scenes but not throughout the file. Action: Update the style sheet, search every variant, and check the final export.
A style sheet can record names, spellings, timeline decisions, and formatting conventions. Keep it beside the manuscript so recurring choices are not made differently during each editing session.
Treat the checklist as a starting point
Add project-specific concerns in the notes: a family history may need source checks and permissions; a novel may need a close look at a character's motivation; a practical guide may need every instruction tested. A general list cannot anticipate every manuscript's needs.
If an item does not apply, explain that in the notes rather than treating it as evidence that the whole book has been checked. Consider a separate reader or editor when familiarity makes problems difficult to see.
Finish with the actual reading format
After revisions, inspect the exported file or proof that readers will receive. A clean editing document does not guarantee a clean layout. Check headings, page breaks, links, images, and the table of contents in that format.
Download your checklist summary before closing the tab; progress is not saved automatically. Keep dated summaries with major manuscript versions. They show what you checked and what remains, which is more useful than naming every successive file “final.”
